KAYLA

ASHER DRIVES US out of town, a hand on my knee. A wiser girl would keep her eyes on the surroundings. She’d be able to tell where the man is driving her, in case she needs the information. But I can’t focus enough on the road. I can’t tell if he’s turning left or right, and he could be going in circles for all I care.

The fingers on my exposed knee burn into my skin. Asher brushes his fingertips against my leg, so slightly, so gently, it’s almost not a touch at all. Even so, I want to lean back on the seat and part my knees, and beg him to touch me higher. My teeth sinking into my lower lip, it’s all that keeps me from moaning. And he’s not even touching me sexually. But Asher has a strange, sexual presence to himself. A power over me. My body warms to his presence, to his touch.

And every time I look at him, he’s looking at me too. As if the road isn’t important enough to keep his attention.

His eyes drill into me, and that electric current from the first day is still here. I take deep breaths and, once the car stops, it catches me by surprise to see we’re parked in front of a two-story wood house, nestled amid the woods.

Night has fallen, and the house is lit up. Several of the internal lights are on, as well as the porch light. A couple sits on chairs near the front door, a child in the woman’s arm. I exit the car with my head swimming. From the heat of Asher’s hand on me, the cool breeze of the night makes me shiver. Asher’s door slams shut and I blink myself back to reality. The two sitting on the porch glance up. First at Asher then at me.

The woman smiles as she gets to her feet. “Is that Kayla?”

My heartbeat kicks up. Do they know me? Why? Did Asher mention me? What did he say? The questions whirl around in my head until I grow breathless.

Asher’s hand on the small of my back brings me to the moment. “Kayla,” he starts, “that’s Kieran,” he points at the man first. He stands next to the woman, towering and broad. His dark hair reaches his shoulders in waves, unlike Asher’s straight curtain reaching his waist. “And his mate, Astrid. The baby is Owen, their nephew.”

“How do you do?” I greet the couple and approach to look at the baby. He’s a toddler, and must be almost two. The kid sleeps, half-open mouth in that careless way children fall asleep.

“Asher talked a lot about you,” Astrid says after shaking my hand. “And he never talks.”

“We were counting the days until you came up here,” Kieran says, shifting closer to his mate.

I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, warm self-consciousness taking my cheeks. That Asher talks about me makes me all giddy.

“Don’t overwhelm her,” Asher hisses from my left and urges me into the house.
